Public sector performance management has been a recurrent topic in CIGAR events. Twenty years after St. Gallen’s conference, and eighteen years passed on the publication of the CIGAR book “Perspectives on Performance Measurement and Public Sector Accounting” [E. Buschor and K. Schedler (Eds.)], we have decided to explicitly consider performance management as the central topic in a CIGAR meeting again. The 11th CIGAR Workshop, which took place at the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave, was a good opportunity to debate developed research and future developments on performance measurement in the public sector. The theme was “Performance Management in the public sector: past, present and future trends”. There were more than forty participants coming from sixteen different countries worldwide.
